Hi friends! Let’s talk about that 3:00 on a workday feeling. Whether you work a 9 to 5 or you’re a SAH mom/boss, you know the one I’m talking about. That “I cannot possibly go on for another second” feeling. If you occasionally feel this way, or let’s be real, if you feel this way on the daily, I’ve got your back! Keep reading for my best tips and tricks to stay productive when those 3:00 blues take over.
- Take a walk
Sometimes we all just need to get away from everything and clear our minds. I love to take a quick walk around the building or outside on a nice day. When I return to my desk, I’m refreshed and ready to dig into the rest of my day.
- Do a desk workout
This is one of my favorite things to do to help me get refocused. My go-to moves are squats, calf raises, standing pushups and Barre3 narrow V posture. Not sure what Barre3 narrow V is? I’ll explain. Stand in a primary posture with your heels together and toes about 4 inches apart. Your feet should form a narrow V (get it?). Now with your pelvis tucked under and your shoulders soft down your back, bend your knees and hold there. If you’re doing this along with me I’m sure you can feel a lot of warmth in your legs. This is so great to do at your desk, because you can continue working while getting a little burn and increasing your endorphins!
- Surround yourself with an organized space
I’m a visual person. My mood is dependent upon the things that surround me. That being said, too many distractions can be just that, distracting. Keeping my immediate surroundings clean and organized helps my brain to stay clean and organized as well.
- Make a list and check it off
Where are all my list makers at? Raise your hands cause I know you’re out there. Ya’ll seriously, how good does it feel to check something off of a list? Who needs drugs when you have sweet little check marks? I love handwritten lists, but OneNote is my work jam. I can keep all of my lists consolidated into one master list. Oh my. Who’s heart just fluttered a little when I said master list?
- Stay hydrated
I cannot stress the importance of this enough! I can tell such a huge difference if I go a full day without drinking water! I usually keep a Yeti cup with ice water at my desk and sip on that all day. This keeps me alert and makes it so much easier to focus.
Take a breath. I need to tell myself this from time to time. When I hit that 3:00 wall and can’t go on any longer, I hit the refresh button. Stand up, take a breath and let your body talk to you.
- Listen to music
I typically play music anytime I’m at my desk doing work. However, when my eyes start getting heavy, I crank it up a notch. Goodbye acoustic Ed Sheeran, hello 80s hair bands. Just don’t let your co-workers peep your cube dance party…or do. No judgment here!
- Eat a light lunch
Do you ever go out with coworkers and eat all the bad things for lunch? Yeah, me too. Probably more times than I should…and I always regret it. Like I want to crawl under my desk and take a serious power nap. Who’s with me? One of my best tips to tackle that mid afternoon fogginess is to eat a light, healthy lunch.
- Set boundaries for social media
I don’t know about you, but when I start losing focus, I immediately reach for my phone to check social media. Resist, people, resist! What helps me is to give myself an incentive to get work done by using my phone as a prize. Try turning your phone off and working for a solid hour before turning it back on? Can’t make it for an hour? Try 30 minute increments. Small victories!
- Change your surroundings
It’s amazing what a change of scenery can do for your brain. Does your workplace have an outside space you can venture to? Get some sunshine and do some work out there. If you work from home, visit a local coffee shop with free wifi. Fresh space=fresh mind.
